Portable Caravan Carports for RVs and Camper Trailers

Most standard carports aren't long enough for caravans — once you include the drawbar, you quickly run out of cover. Caravan shelters need extra length, not just width.

Height matters too. Roof-mounted air cons and solar panels add more height than most people expect — and that's usually only discovered after the shelter is already up. Our kits offer higher clearance with adjustable height options — that's where a caravan-specific shelter makes the difference.

These are sold as DIY relocatable shelter kits — not certified permanent carports. Council rules vary by area and setup, so check with your local council before you buy. If you need a certified permanent carport, contact us.

Common Caravan Setups

Why Caravan Owners Choose a Dedicated Shelter

The van just sits there between trips. The problem is what happens to it while it does.

At Home Caravan Parking

The van sits in the driveway for months between trips — baking in summer, collecting gum leaves, seals slowly cracking. A shelter fixes that. No builder needed.

Side Access and Long Driveways

Most caravans don't fit in a standard garage — so they end up down the side of the house with nothing over them. A shelter fits that space. Relocatable, nothing locked in.

Long-Term Storage Between Trips

A caravan parked outside for months takes more wear than most people expect. UV breaks down seals, water gets into fittings, the exterior fades faster than it should.

Acreage and Larger Properties

On a bigger block, you want covered parking without pouring concrete or calling a builder. Steel shelter, goes up on gravel. Simple.

How to Measure

How to Measure for a Caravan Carport

Most people measure the van body and stop there. That’s usually where the mistake starts.

What matters is the full length including the drawbar, plus enough width and height to actually use the van once it’s parked.

1. Measure the Full Length

Measure from the rear bumper to the very tip of the drawbar. That full number is what you should size to — not just the van body.

2. Add Extra Length

Add at least 300–600mm extra so the front and rear aren’t sitting right on the edge of the shelter. If you want easier access, go a little bigger.

3. Check Width for Real Use

Can you open the side door fully? Get to the storage hatches without climbing over something? That's what width actually determines.

4. Don’t Forget Height

Measure from the ground to the highest point, including rooftop air cons, antennas or solar panels. Height is adjustable — but you still need to know your number before ordering.

Before You Choose

Caravan Carport FAQs

The questions most people wish they'd asked before ordering.

Do I need to include the drawbar when choosing a size?

Yes. Always measure from the rear of the van to the very tip of the drawbar. Leave it out and the drawbar sits in the rain.

What if my caravan is between two sizes?

Go bigger. The smaller option might technically fit, but it usually feels tight once you try to park, walk around it or access the storage hatches. Most people never regret the extra room.

Is height really that important?

Yes. Rooftop AC, solar panels and antennas are what catch people out. Get it wrong and you find out on installation day — when it's too late to swap sizes.

Does width matter if the caravan already fits underneath?

It does if you want to actually use the caravan. The real test is whether you can open the side door properly, get to the storage hatches and move around the van without squeezing through.

Can I move it later if I change where I park the caravan?

Yes. That’s one of the main reasons people choose this type of shelter. Pick it up and move it if your layout changes or you shift house.

Do I need council approval for a caravan shelter?

Most customers installing a portable shelter don't need to go through a council process — but rules vary by area, so worth a quick check before you buy.
