Double Portable Carports for Two Vehicles, Utes & Trailers

A 6m wide double carport is the standard size for two cars, utes or a car plus trailer — giving you enough space to park, open doors and move around comfortably.

One car is easy. Two cars is where space becomes the real issue — doors hitting each other, one sitting half outside, and the whole setup feeling like a compromise. The extra width makes everyday use practical, not frustrating.

These are sold as DIY relocatable shelter kits — not certified permanent carports. Council rules vary by area and setup, so always check with your local council before you buy. If you need a certified permanent carport, view our Carport Kits range.

Popular Double Carport Sizes

For two vehicles, 6m width is the standard. Choose 6m, 7.5m or 9m length depending on whether you need simple parking or extra space for a ute, trailer or storage.

Common Double Setups

Why People Choose a Double-Width Shelter

The problem usually isn’t getting two vehicles under cover. It’s getting two vehicles under cover in a way that still works day to day.

Two Cars at Home

One ends up half outside, doors hit each other, and the whole space feels tight. A double-width shelter fixes that. Both vehicles in, doors open, done.

Ute + Daily Driver

A ute takes up more room than people expect, especially once mirrors, trays and door clearance come into it. Extra width makes the setup usable, not just covered.

Trailer Beside the Vehicle

A lot of buyers don’t need two cars under it — they need one car and one trailer, or one ute and extra covered space beside it. That’s where the wider footprint matters.

Larger Blocks and Open Driveways

On bigger properties, people usually want practical covered parking without paying for a full shed build. A double shelter gives you usable space without calling a builder or pouring a slab.

Measure Guide

How to Check If a Double Carport Will Fit

Most people measure the cars and stop there. The problems show up later — when you can't open the door properly or someone has to squeeze past every time.

1. Check Total Width First

A double setup needs around 6m clear width — not including walls or obstacles.

  • Measure wall-to-wall or fence-to-fence
  • If it's under ~5.5m → expect tight parking
  • If it's 6m+ → comfortable for daily use

2. Plan for Door Opening Space

Getting both cars in is usually fine. Getting out every morning without hitting a door on something — that's where most setups fall short.

  • Allow at least 600–800mm per side
  • Less than that → doors hit walls or each other

3. Match Length to Your Longest Vehicle

Use your longest car or ute as the reference — not the shortest one.

  • Standard cars → 6m usually enough
  • Utes / trailers → consider 7.5m+
  • Add 300–600mm buffer front and back

4. Leave Room to Move

Parking takes 30 seconds. You deal with the rest every day.

  • Can you walk between the cars without turning sideways?
  • Can you get to the house door without going around?
  • Can you unload the ute without shuffling everything first?

Common Mistakes

  • Measuring car width only and ignoring door opening
  • Trying to squeeze into a narrow driveway
  • Choosing exact length with no buffer space
  • Forgetting access paths or walkways

Quick Rule

  • Two cars side by side → aim for 6m+ width
  • Want comfortable daily use → allow extra side space
  • Ute + trailer → 7.5m minimum, 9m if you want room to unhitch properly

Double Carport FAQs

The questions most people wish they'd asked before ordering.

Why does a “6m carport” still feel tight?

Because the width you measure is not the space you actually use. Door opening, mirrors and daily movement take more room than people expect. A 6m span works, but it’s the minimum. If your driveway is closer to 5.5m, it will feel tight every day.

Is it enough just to fit two cars inside?

Fitting two cars is the easy part. If you can't open the door without hitting the other car, you'll know about it by day three.

Do I really need extra length beyond my car?

Yes. If you match the exact vehicle length, you leave no room for movement, storage or future upgrades. Adding 300–600mm buffer makes everyday use far more practical.

Will this work for a ute or trailer setup?

It depends on length, not just width. Utes and trailers often require 7.5m or more. If you plan to unhitch or access the rear, a 9m setup is usually the safer choice.

What’s the biggest mistake people make with double carports?

Measuring the cars only. Most problems show up the first morning — when someone can't get out without reversing first.
